FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS

One clear step at a time.

You need only this Studio. Blank paper and a pencil are useful for trying the steps yourself; a separate worksheet is optional. On blank paper, label four sections A, B, C, and D. For C, draw a short number line.

  1. Press “Start with acceptable heights.” Read the story together. Then follow parts A, B, C, and D.
  2. Use the green button. Its words tell you what appears next. One click shows the next step. Nothing advances on a timer.
  3. Try the “On your paper” prompt. Give the student time to think and write. The next step shows how to continue. Choice questions are answered by clicking a choice.
  4. Ask about meaning. “What does x measure?” “How far is this height from the target?” “Does the boundary pass or fail?” The explanations are here; you do not need to supply them.
  5. Use Back when needed. The A–D buttons jump to the start of a part. Each problem keeps its place until you start over or refresh.
  6. Finish with the unacceptable case. It uses a different target and asks for heights that fail. Pay attention to the open circles and the word OR.
Words used here

Height: how far the platform top is above the ground. Target: the stated center height. Absolute value: the bars give a nonnegative distance; |x − 7| is the distance from height x to 7. Boundary: an endpoint where the answer changes.

Paper pause holds your place while you write. Motion: None keeps every step still. Tab moves between controls; Enter or Space selects a button; Escape closes a window. Full screen is optional and depends on your browser.
