A LITTLE HELP, ONE STEP AT A TIME

You do not need to teach the algebra.

Read one step together. Ask your student what each symbol means and why the next line is still true. On the worksheet back, let your student do the writing.

  1. Start with meaning. A system asks for values that make every equation true. Here, the same two values must make both linear equations true.
  2. Use the green button. It shows one new step at a time. Back revisits the previous step. Nothing moves on a timer.
  3. Keep the worksheet beside you. The front is fully worked. On the back, your student does the thinking and writing before opening a hint or check.
  4. Ask, then give time. “What does x mean here?” “What did you do to both sides?” “How do you know the pair works?”
  5. If a line differs, compare the first difference. Another correct route can work. Check the final pair in both originals; revise an incorrect step and continue.
Helpful words

Variable: a letter standing for a number. Term: a part added or subtracted, such as 3y. Elimination: combining equations so one variable’s terms cancel. Ordered pair: (x, y), with x first.

Tab moves between controls. Enter or Space activates a button. Escape closes a window. “Paper pause” keeps your place while you write. Use “Motion: None” for still pages. Closing or refreshing the Studio starts a new session.

TAKE YOUR TIME

Pencil down a clear next step.

Your place is held. Inspect before you think. Think before you write. Write before you answer. Explain how you know.

Keep equal signs aligned. Show the operation on both sides. When you have a pair, check both original equations.
